Question: A patient was seen for a screening colonoscopy. Can I use modifier 33 with ASA code 00810 for a commercial payer?

Answer: Yes, you should be able to file the claim that way. Include modifier 33 (Preventive services) with 00810 (Anesthesia for lower intestinal endoscopic procedures, endoscope introduced distal to duodenum) to indicate that it is for screening. The patient should not have a cost share for the anesthesia, but this might be policy or insurance dependent. Ensure that the diagnosis is for a “screening” to help with insurance coverage.
