Reader Question:

Max Out With 2 Units of 80154

Question: Can we bill multiple units of 80154? If so, what is the maximum allowed?

Illinois Subscriber

Answer: You can bill a maximum of two units of 80154 (Benzodiazepines).

Beginning in 2007, CMS established Medically Unlikely Edits (MUEs) to reduce the paid claims error rate for Part B claims. An MUE for a HCPCS or CPT® code states the maximum units of service a provider should report under most circumstances for a single beneficiary on a single date of service.

All HCPCS and CPT® codes do not have an associated MUE. Code 80154 does, however, have an MUE of two.
