Generally Say 'No' to Providing Anesthesia for Dental Procedures

Question: Can an anesthesiologist provide dental anesthesia for procedures such as dental extraction, crown placement, or pulpaping?

Answer: There may be certain circumstances, such a pediatric patient that requires anesthesia. Generally, a medical anesthesiologist cannot provide anesthesia for dental procedures such as those you list. According to guidelines from the American Dental Association (ADA), the administration of local anesthesia, sedation, and general anesthesia is an integral part of dental practice. Dentists should provide sedation and anesthesia in compliance with their state rules and regulations.
