Reader Question:

Do Not Report Separately for Failed Epidural

Question: How should we bill a failed epidural when a different provider performed the procedure? The OB patient was in an extremely long labor and the epidural was performed more than once.

Answer: Regardless of how many times the labor epidural was placed, you do not bill an additional fee or charge. Instead, report only 01967 (Neuraxial labor analgesia/anesthesia for planned vaginal delivery [this includes any repeat subarachnoid needle placement and drug injection and/or any necessary replacement of an epidural catheter during labor]).
