Reader Question:

Code 76942 Has No Anesthesia Crosswalk

Question: One of our anesthesiologists insists there is an ASA code valued at one base unit that crosswalks from 76942. I cannot find this anywhere; what am I missing?

Answer: You are not missing anything, because the current crosswalk does not include an anesthesia code associated with 76942 (Ultrasonic guidance for needle placement (eg, biopsy, aspiration, injection, localization device), imaging supervision and interpretation).

When searching for coding advice, you’ll probably see the “IC” notation with 76942 in place of a base value. This stands for “Individual Consideration,” which means each payer determines the amount they will pay for ultrasound guidance since an official unit of value has not been established in the RVG®.
