Anesthesia Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Code 10999

Question: How should I code for anesthesia during an electroencephalogram (EEG)?

Michigan Subscriber

Answer: Code 01999 (unlisted anesthesia service) is about the only code you can use. Since anesthesia is not usually required for an EEG, be sure to also code using modifier -23 (unusual anesthesia) and any supporting documentation for its use.
