Anesthesia Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Begin with 01936 for Anesthesia During Kyphoplasty

Question: One of our physicians administered anesthesia during a patient’s kyphoplasty procedure. I’m thinking the best code is 01936 but am not certain. What would you recommend for the anesthesiologist’s work?

Answer: In most situations, the most appropriate code for anesthesia during kyphoplasty is 01936 (Anesthesia for percutaneous image guided procedures on the spine and spinal cord; therapeutic). There might be times when the case is more complicated and converts from a percutaneous procedure to an open procedure. At that point you would report a code from the 00600-00635 family based on the spinal area and the extent of the procedure.
