Anesthesia Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Alternative Therapies

Question: I am a nurse in private, independent practice, and am board certified in pain management. Are there any billing codes applicable to a nurse using alternative therapies in pain management?

Kansas Subscriber

Answer: There are no specific codes for these providers; use the same codes used by physicians for E/M services or other procedures as appropriate. The bigger issue is what carriers will pay this type of provider. You need to negotiate payment levels in advance with commercial carriers, and also check with your local Medicare and Medicaid carriers.
