An anesthesiologist was convicted recently of defrauding insurance companies. According to an article in the Jan. 10, 2001, New York Times, she allegedly billed for providing anesthesia at gynecological procedures covered by insurance (e.g., cyst removal) when, in fact, the actual operations done by the gynecologist were noncovered fertility procedures. One of her unsuccessful defenses was that she had only limited knowledge of proper Medical coding and billing. The New York City gynecologist was also convicted of similar charges.
