Ambulatory Coding & Payment Report
In Brief: FIs Must Pay for OPPS Items
HCFA has ordered fiscal intermediaries (FIs) to make biweekly payments for various items that are not paid under the outpatient prospective payment system (OPPS). These items include direct medical education payments, costs of nursing and allied health programs, bad debts for uncollectible deductibles and coinsurance, and organ- acquisition costs paid under Medicare Part B.
Because you have not been paid for these items since APCs started, your first payment for these services will be retroactive to Aug. 1, 2000. HCFAs order for the bi-weekly payments is in its program memorandum transmittal A-01-32, accessible online at www.hcfa.gov.
