Summary

We may agree that the new guidelines do provide simplification for audit as we have one guideline for all E/M services and we no longer have to worry about the “bullet counting” for assessing a level for all areas of evaluation and management services. The changes have also brought some confusion for some elements.

The workshop will review the E/M 2023 Guidelines from an auditing perspective. We will review the federal guidelines and AMA definition that pertain to the Complexity of Problems Addressed, Amount and or Complexity of Data and Risk of Complications and or Morbidity or Mortality of Patient Management.

What you will learn:

  • Explore each area of the E/M Guidelines in depth
  • Discuss the definitions that apply to each area of the Guidelines
  • Review of the AMA grid for Medical Decision Making
  • Discuss how payer input (or lack thereof) affects application of our Guidelines
  • Discuss educating providers of key components

Why is this topic timely/important?

This workshop will provide an opportunity to fine tune your understanding of each of the areas within the E/M guidelines. Many coders and auditors are struggling with the application and definitions provided by the AMA. In addition, others may struggle with assessing data. We will discuss and review the common areas of confusion as well as the gray areas. The workshop will be interactive and allow the participants an opportunity to work through scenarios and discuss the different methods of applying these guidelines to various types of E/M services.

Who would benefit from this topic?

Auditors, Coders, Billing, Physicians, Midlevel Providers
